Ever since i first started playing video games all those unspecified years ago i have had kind of a like/frustrated as hell relationship with them. Yes, i have broken at least one controller by spiking it into the ground.
It seems i have limitations that maybe i didn't used to. i wonder how people look fondly on video game difficulty. Difficulty = frustration, frustration does not equal fun (and i have a low tolerance for frustration). i get no net satisfaction from lingering on a tough section - if i finally overcome it. i hate the trend of masochistic games (Dark Souls and the like). Every game should have an Easy/Casual mode (no, there is no such thing as "too easy").
i'll admit, sometimes i have to view a level on YouTube to complete it (i have less tolerance for more obscure hints about what to do than i used to). In a story focused game, how to progress should be obvious. Exploration games have a little more leeway. Sometimes i know what to do, but don't know the exact timing until i see it (i kind of suck with timing).
Limitations i seem to have in video games:
* i have trouble telling exactly where i am on screen (especially jarring in some 2.5D games where you have to line up jumps)
* i cannot move both thumbsticks at the same time (no i cannot move and aim at the same time)
* Faster motions scenes are harder to follow (i'm sure Sonic the Hedgehog would be a nightmare for me now). Sometimes i struggle to pick up enemy movement in that type of situation.
* Aiming the "cursor"/reticle - i'm not good at (and definitely not quickly). i have a really tough time aiming while moving (Sunset Overdrive drives me crazy with this - i shouldn't have purchased that game). In other words, i can't do it.
* First person shooters: it seems like the enemies all move too fast for me to target. Quit moving enemies, stand fricking still (problem in Borderlands 2, Halo MCC, etc)
* Hitting two buttons or more at the same time - i'm not good at that (and can't do consistently)
So what do i dislike about modern video games (it turns out a lot):
* Escort/Defense Missions: i should not be forced to protect or escort something (and fail not when my character dies, but when some NPC or something does) - these suck 1,000% of the time
* Timed Areas/Being Chased: i hate doing a level (like Rayman Legends) and being chased by the level - if the boss/mist catches up to you, you have to do the whole stupid section again. In Rayman it was trickier, as you had to do specific jumps/moves while having a time crunch. i hate this added frustration mechanic
* Difficulty Spikes/Mechanic Changes: i'm slightly ok with the concept of games gradually getting harder as it goes on. However, when a mechanic changes substantially or a boss is just insanely harder, it gets to me. BioShock Infinite bothers me too: you play the whole game one way then all of the sudden you are faced with a wave battle (the only time in the game) - lame. When they all of the sudden introduce QTEs (which are overused by the way) when they didn't have them before is annoying too.
* Blocking: i hate blocking. i hate enemies blocking more (especially when they spam their blocks). i've always thought that blocking is for wusses
* Jump Puzzles: i'll admit i suck at these (especially when they involve exact button press sequences at exact times). The more convoluted ones - where you have to swim/float/etc over spikes are maddening. This is another area where Rayman Legends pisses me off (then they add a time component - like falling platforms and chasing mists).
* Mutiplayer: i don't like humans, why would i want to add unpredictability to a game. It seems like the modes are all the same in every game (though every game now seems like a 3rd or 1st person shooter). There should never have been multiplayer achievements.
* Level Scaling: i hate it when games introduce "level scaling" for "balance". If you are playing an RPG, you shouldn't be punished for leveling up - you should be allowed to level up if you want to (up to the point you can one-hit the final boss). i don't always level grind, but when i do i want to be "overpowered" (actually there is no such thing).
* Complicated Control Schemes: This is where i have always hated fighting games. Let's see - do a half circle back while hitting all of the face buttons at the same time - no thanks. i just wish that controls would be more context sensitive (less total "moves"). i've never been able to do the Down-left, Left-Down (Z like) move. i don't want to use every stupid button on the controller (that is not necessary). Combo sequences drive me crazy to (was that 10 or 11 button presses in a row in a specific order, in a very limited time frame)
Though sometimes controls are mapped oddly - like the A button jumps and interacts with objects (no i didn't want to jump, i wanted to open the chest).
* Open World games with useless filler: wow, RPG X now is open world - which means useless quests and caves that don't really need to be there (and add nothing to the story). Also Forza Horizon 2 adding pointless "road trips" that cannot be skipped.
* Falling Levels: i hate levels where you don't have much control. Tomb Raider (the Xbox 360 reboot) had 3-4 of these: where you were essentially "falling" (whether it be a parachute, waterfall, or series of cables). The Lego Movie Video game had one of these (the only reason i didn't 1,000 it). Usually, they are kind of fast segments (where you are moving at a faster rate of speed).
