The Bottom Line:
Dragon Age II is the sequel to Dragon Age Origins. So, if you played the first game you know what the second game is like (though it has been somewhat dumbed down).
If you never played the first Dragon Age game... Dragon Age 2 is kind of an action RPG (lighter on the RPG than i wish). Sure, you can still level up and there is a degree of character progression - but it feels more like an action game. Yes, Dragon Age 2 reuses areas (so not are all unique). You can still set the other characters that travel with you up with tactics (i still hate tactics) that essentially tells them how to behave. Why heal yourself is not a default tactic, i still don't understand. In this game, however, the characters seems to chose their weapons and armor (though you can find some upgrades throughout the game). The game is segmented into years (not necessarily in one year segments) where certain key events happen.
The story in this game is passable - a little better than the first one (outside of Mass Effect, BioWare's recent stories in their games have been pretty weak/forgetable). You play as Hawk (male or female) - a refuge who becomes the hero of a town called Kirkwall. The story is a little different in that it is being told semi-flashback by a third party (one of the NPCs you can have in your party).
Grade: C
Add-Ons:
* The Exiled Prince (560 points - about $7 US)
* Legacy (800 points - about $10 US)
* Mark of the Assassin (800 points - about $10 US)
What to Expect:
* A medium lenght action-rpg (25 hours or so).
* 3 different classes to play as (Mage, Rogue and Warrior)
* Some kind of tough bosses/optional bosses (like a high dragon)
* Tactics - some degree of micro-managing characters in battle
* Lots of quests to do (the game seems mostly quest centered)
* Romances available with several characters (though they changed when the achievement hits)
* Companions not can become friends or rivals
* Some quests have mutliple choice outcomes - but it seems obvious what the responses do
* Crafting and resources to find scattered throughout the area
Achievements:
i do not have any of the DLC, so i can't speak for that. However, the full game seems like it is somewhat reasonable (but time consuming). You have acheivements for completing certain quests (like defeating certain enemies), crafting/resourse collection, romance, reaching level 20, finding books/messages (called Enigmas or Kirkwall), killing X enemies, not dying in a year, etc.
How i Played:
Difficulty: Casual
Game Time: 25 hours (well 25 x 2 playthroughs for 50 hours)
Achievements: 45/50 for (850 of 1,000) - no DLC
