This week was a busy one for the video game sector. E3 happened with all of the various announcements and demos, etc. So what have i been thinking about this week?
E3
As i mentioned E3 was this week. E3 has changed a lot from the "golden age" in the 90s and early 2000s. Now it seems to be targeted more to the mainstream press than a bunch of narrow interest sites. E3 was also a little better when people didn't have 1,000+ outlets to leak information. Apparently people don't respect non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) anymore.
Nintendo announced the Wii U (which is a really stupid name). Basically, they will likely advertise it as the Wii for You (you being the more "hardcore" gamer). The release date is still a ways off. The one strange thing about this console is the ridiculously large controller. It kind of sounds a little like a much advanced version of the Dreamcast VMU. Personally, i am not a fan of touch interfaces - so i have already written off the conosle (plus its Nintendo).
Sony announced that the PSN is actually up and running (currently). i guess their other big announcement was the PS Vita. Living la Vita loca. So, i think this is also another stupid name for a device. Unlike others i scoff at a portable game player price over $200. Maybe that was a post for another day (it probably will be). They also showed off some of their games.
Microsoft announced that its flagship series, Halo, was coming in 2012. They also showed increased Kinect functionality and the new dashboard. Voice command search was probably the coolest thing they showed (at least for me).
What i've been doing:
Well, i have mostly taken the week off from actual gaming. Who knew that libraries had so many movies? i have played around a little bit with Kinect Fun Labs, Assassin's Creed and Marvel Ultimate Adventures. i am strongly considering doing a leaderboard looking session on Game Room. i have to see how bad my predictions were, eventually.
i have been seriously thinking about the games i am going to get for the rest of the year (though there is still plenty of time for Kinect game announcements). My current plans are: Rise of Nightmares, Witcher 2 and Kinect Sports: The Second Season. i may also get Forza 4 if i can find it on sale (or the other games on sale for enough to justifiy it).
i wish there would have been a Lips Kinect announcement - as i could have easily gotten 100+ hours of play with that (assuming 20 or so decent songs, more hours with a few Breathe songs). One game i will not be getting is Skyrim - partly because Bethesda games are known bugfests at launch and there will more than likely be a Game of the Year Edition in a year or less.
i also decided to start playing around with jump breaks, as i tend to get somewhat wordy.
