i think i'm gonna need a bigger hard drive

Well, one of the theories in economics is that of limited resources.  Well, one of my resources that I have found out that is limited is my Xbox 360 and Xbox One hard drive space. (i temporarily forget that Blogger is useless with IE 11).

Video Game Resolutions 2015

2015 is quickly approaching (good thing I don't have to write dates out, the year change always messed me up for a few months).  I met most of my video game resolutions last year (I set the bar far too low - that will continue this year).  What do I hope to "achieve" in 2015?

Black Friday-ish haul

So what did i get this Black Friday season (i prefer Thursday sales)?

Well, there were not really a lot of games out there that i was interested in.  The theme in "retail" (all AMZN) was repurchase

Xbox One: Has It Really Been a Year?

Time flies when you are looking back (when you live it, it seems to drag on forever).

Well, a year ago i picked up my Xbox One launch day console (bought with $420 or so in store credit from Game Stop).  Let's see... at about 3:55 PM on 11/22/13.  That was one heavy box.  Some things have changed, some haven't.

My Year With Gold: November 2014

The first full month of my year with a gold subscription has arrived.  So, what is the current value i am assigning (i will probably have to revisit this in the future for values of XB1 Games With Gold).

My Year With Gold

My Xbox Live Gold Subscription would have expired on October 22, 2014.  However, i decided to get a card and add another year.  So, this tag (MYWG - or My Year With Gold) will detail the approximated value that i derive from having a gold account.

So, what is included?  Basically, discounts, Games with Gold (GWG) and Free to Play.  i am not including Warframe and Project Spark in this year.  i am also not including the games i have previously downloaded in Games with Gold.  i am valuing the Games With Gold "rentals" as $5.04 (for rounding purposes) with declining value based off of the duration left on my gold subscription.  Example: i will value next month's GWG as $5 - $.42 (or $4.58).  Essentially losing $.42 a month.  For Xbox 360 games i may substitute trade-in value for games when applicable.

Destiny Beta Impressions

Well, the Destiny beta has been unlocked for all Xbox Gold members, so I thought I would try it out.

First of all, Destiny (if you didn't know) is from Bungie, the developer of the first three Halo games.  So, in some ways this seems a little like Halo (with some other games thrown in - Borderlands, etc.).

Xbox Live Utlimate Game Sale July 2014

Well, apparently it is time to increase my backlog again (if there are any games worth getting).  Unfortunately, I am running low on points (and lower on hard drive space).  I wish there would be some decent deals for the Xbox One as well (the console I still have free memory space).

So, what have I got so far (and what have I considered)

Guacamelee Xbox One - i Hate This Game

Well, Games with Gold is here for the month of July.  This month saw a lone title added: Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition

So what do I think about Guacamelee after playing it for a little while.  It is too fucking hard (not so much the combat, but the stupid jump puzzles - ok some of the combat is annoying).  I hate jump puzzles and this game is almost completely full of them.  What makes them worse are some of the mechanics.  This game drastically overuses the plane shift mechanic.

Dead Rising 2: Aaargh

Well, I finally beat Dead Rising 2 after much, much, much, much cursing (but I didn't get an achievement for it).  I hate it when you have to do something specifically before the end boss to get an achievement for beating the end boss (finishing that chapter).  The achievement list on this game is terrible.  Well, that is just the topping on this game...

Compared to Dead Rising 3, this game sucks.  To be fair, I could only do DR3 after about level 15-20 (then it got better).  Timed missions, annoying zombies constantly in your way, stupid NPCs who don't do what you want them to, pointlessly large area with no instant travel - check.  This game is kind of frustrating (made more so by the inability to fast travel and a very slow moving main character, everything being timed, a clunky crafting system - greatly improved by the sequel, and an insane amount of 10-20 second load screens - sometimes right after a "cut scene" that had a load before it).

MSFT E3 2014 Impressions

Well, I was right that a lot of stuff wouldn't be announced at E3.  So what did I think about the actual E3 this year?

I think last year's E3 was better (the actual presentation except the price announcement, not the lead up to the presentation).  Last year saw games like Ryse, Forza 5, Quatum Break, D4, etc.  This year's presentation just wasn't as interesting to me.  Maybe it's because what I would like to see is not what others want.  I guess i'll just have to win a very, very large lottery jackpot to make that happen

Deals With Gold. And Stuff That Maybe You Shouldn't Read (Cause it's boring and listy)

Along with the June Update came Deals with Gold (DWG) - I guess there were already deals on Xbox One games, but this is kind of like rebranding.  There supposedly will be a new deal weekly.  They awkwardly phrase the savings as "Up to 50-75% off" (the bolded part is mine).  It is really strange to phrase it this way.  Saying "up to" and then giving a range also.  They should have said up to 75% off.  I would guess retail games will probably be limited to 33% off the first time through the line-up.

This week's deal is Crimson Dragon at 50% off.  I am considering this though I know at some point this is likely to show up on Games With Gold.  I would guess the rest of the Deals with Gold this month would be: Ryse, Forza 5, and LocoCycle (which is destined for Games With Gold in the not too distant future).

Games With Gold

Well, the June update has finally landed - adding support for external USB 3.0 hard drives and beginning Games With Gold on the Xbox One.  I have a feeling it will probably be 2 games a month (with some potential repeats - since it's still too early to start adding retail titles to the program, outside Zoo Tycoon).

This Month (June)
* Max The Curse of Brotherhood - I have a post on this somewhere
https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6514613432369960413#editor/target=post;postID=36973205634780801;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=17;src=postname

* Halo: Spartan Assault

Xbox 360
* Dead Souls (through June 15th) - I wonder if I can insanely grind levels in this game or if they have the stupid "enemies level with you" paradigm

* Charlie Murder (June 16th-30th)
* Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (June 16th-30th)

MSFT E3 2014: What Won't Happen

MSFT's E3 presentation is slated for next Monday (at 9:30AM PST or PDT whatever it is).  The internet has been pretty bad with rumors (could it be that people are actually honoring their NDAs like they should).

So, what won't be at MSFT's E3 (because I want it to happen, which pretty much assures it won't).  Think of these as anti-rumors.  This is sort of "past" heavy, but then again the past was passable and the future will suck.

Child of Light

Child of Light is a downloadable ($15, roughly 2.31 GB) game available on multiple platforms.  I played it on the Xbox One.

Child of Light puts you in the roll of a princess of light trying to return light back to the land of Lemuria.  The gameplay is sort of reminiscent of Grandia, with a semi turn-based action bar battle system.  You can gain advantages by interrupting enemy attacks (if you're lucky enough).  You are paired up with one other character at a time and usually face 2-3 enemies.  Some enemies have weaknesses to certain elements.  Certain attacks are slower than others (a good chance to use your firefly buddy to either heal yourself in battle or slow the enemy down a little).  There is also a crafting system (adding bonuses to weapon, armor and/or accessory slot).

Overall, I spent about 11 hours on this game playing on Normal (and dying more than I would like to admit, but I hate using items - on Normal, there isn't really a "death penalty").  I wish it would have been a little less expensive, but overall it isn't that bad of a deal.  I'm not sure what replay value there is, but there is a Game + mode after you beat it and at least one other difficulty.

I kind of hope that this generation will have more of these types of games (I could go for some full turn-based JRPG style games at about this price point).

My First 1,000 GamerScore Xbox One Game

i never thought that I would actually ever get a 1,000/1,000 GamerScore game on the Xbox One, but last night I finally did.

So, what was the lucky game?
Nutjistu.

It took me 9 hours (according to SmartGlass) to do it, I kind of suck at that game.  You only need to get to level 23 not level 25 to unlock the last achievement.  The 1K isn't hard, it's just a little time consuming.

Nutjitsu

What is Nutjitsu?

Nutjitsu is the second (i think) ID@Xbox release (and the first by developer Ninja Bee on the Xbox One).  If you have Windows 8, this is available from the Windows Store for Free (pay-to-play type game).  i didn't like how you had to "draw" on the screen to move in that version.

In this game you play as a squirrel trying to save acorns from a pack of fox interlopers.  In some ways this plays a little like Pac-Man where you go through mazes collecting acorns and completing "missions" - like collect 15 acorns, etc.  Unlike traditional Pac-Man there are power ups(nothing as good as power pellets though, at least that i have access to) - like a freeze bomb (freezes the "ghosts" in their place for a few seconds), smoke bomb (you can evade enemies), speed boost, etc.  There isn't a coherent story here... you just take it level by level attempting missions (usually a single mission doesn't last that long).  There is also a Survival mode (which i haven't attempted yet).

Unfortunately, like Pac-Man this game has control issues.  It is not always a smooth path around the mazes (especially with the thumbstick), i think the d-pad is a little better (it never got "stuck" on me).  The controls feel a little sluggish.

If you want the full GamerScore, it is going to take a lot of grinding to get up to level 25 (relatively low XP rewards for completing missions).

This is the cheapest game currently available for the Xbox One ($6.49 US).  It doesn't have the Game DVR option.

What to Do With Rare

After the not so successful release of Kinect Sports Rivals (I think this title is more of a seasonal seller anyway), several people were let go at Rare.  Some on-line message boards lamented and called the death of Rare, again....

i never had a Nintendo console, so i don't know about the "vintage" Rare.  A lot of what they did under MSFT (that wasn't cancelled) seemed to be trying to replicate that success they had with Nintendo a little too closely.  i think they were trying to sell their games at too high a price.

What is my view of Rare and what do I think should happen with them?

I see Rare as being miscast as a AAA developer.  I think of them somewhere between Turn 10 and Twisted Pixel (so maybe AA, in minor league baseball parlance).  Their games should be aiming for the $29.99-$39.99 price point (not $60).  Yes, I would love another Kameo, Viva Pinata and collect-a-thon Banjo game.  I would also love someone to port all the 1st party Kinect games to Xbox One (Fable Journey and Kinect Adventures being my favorites).

So what would I do if I owned Rare
* Separate into 4 teams
  - Kinect Team
  - Free to Play Team (eventually I see Lift London getting merged into Rare)
  - Port/Remake Team (deals with getting Rare IP on the Xbox One.  Not just Rare IP, MSFT IP)
  - "Retail" team: making/prototyping retail games, new IP.  Maybe some actually getting released.

I've always wondered how many people would read a post titled "Do Not Read".

Amazon Fire TV, Could Eventually Be Interesting

Recently Amazon (AMZN) announced and releases their long rumored set-top box for $99 USD.  Currently, it seems a little expensive to me ($99 for the set-top box and the controller - maybe).  My TV is already running short of HDMI ports too.  I don't really need a set-top box (have Smart TV, "Smart" Blu-Ray Player and Xbox One)

This set top box has the ability to play some games (probably Android related).  I have no real interest in the Android ecosystem (especially phones/tablets - I prefer Windows RT/8) so this could be an interesting way to get some of the titles I've been missing out on (without a lot of the crap in the Google Play store). If this could get a lot more "retro" titles (and turn-based RPGs), I would be more interested (plus AMZN has been building a sort of gaming group there, which could be interesting - they did just buy Double Helix).

$20 DL Titles and Other Xbox One Related Stuff

So here I am again, I guess I should post every once in a while.  So, what have I been thinking about this weak week?  One more week until I get to try out Kinect Sports Rivals (I wonder what ever happened to D4).

South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360, light spoilers)

I got South Park: The Stick of Truth on Tuesday and I have already beaten it twice (all but 3 achievements).  I can definitely see why it was rated M.  So how did I like it?

Things in Video Games That Annoy Me: Enemy Blocking

Within the few weeks I have primarily been playing three games on my Xbox 360: Fable Anniversary, Ninenty-Nine Nights and (recently) Viking: Battle for Asgard.  Viking is my least favorite of the three.  One thing kind of annoys me (several things each game)...

The enemies in these games seem to block too much.

I am not a fan of enemies blocking at all (I dislike blocking too, blocking is for wusses).  I guess passive player blocking is ok - aggressive NPC/enemy blocking, not so much.  It is annoying in these hack-and-slash combat types hitting attack buttons and seeing the enemies block repeatedly (at least have enemies take damage while blocking).  In 99 Nights, a frog guy seemingly blocked my attempts at attacking for like two minutes straight (an ogre chieftain blocked way too much also).

Xbox One: The Current State of My Experience: Launch to February 2014

That is a wordy title, so what does it mean.  Well, this is my monthly(?) post about what I have been up to on the Xbox One.  This is the first so, it is since launch.  Time spent is according to SmartGlass.  For some gameplay or other clips check out my Game DVR post.

Xbox 360 "Ultimate Games Sale".. Increasing My Backlog

Today is day 5 of 7 of the Ultimate Games Sale on the Xbox 360.  Now I sort of know how Steam users feel.   My MSFT point (ok Xbox Credit) amount has taken a huge hit in the past few days (so did my available hard drive space).  I have been looking for sub $5 retail games (games on demand) and sub $2 XBLA titles

So what have I got so far...
* Mass Effect: $3.74 (a rebuy, previously traded in at GameStop)
* Bejeweled 3: $1.04
* Darksiders: $4.99 (a rebuy, previously traded in at GameStop)
* Walking Dead Season Two Episode 1: $0.99
* Viking: Battle for Asgard: $3.74

Titanfall... So i Tried the Open Beta

Recently Titanfall had an open beta.

It in no way changed my perception of the game - I wasn't going to buy it, and I don't intend to now (unless a huge lottery win in the future, then I would buy almost all XB1 games).  So why wouldn't I buy this game?  Two reasons: I wouldn't buy a multiplayer only game (not a fan of what do you call them... people) and I suck at it (and shooters in general).  People always seem to be more unpredictable than AI.  Everyone said it was easy, I didn't find that to be the case.

Other than no single player what problems did I have?
* I hate their zooming mechanism (staring down the barrel)
* I frequently cannot see enemy pilots on the map (and they come up behind me), I need my little red dots
* I shoot them seemingly four times, they shoot me once (who dies?)
* Not sure how much of an impact "leveling" plays (does a "noob" even stand a chance)
* Little breaks while it is attempting to contact the servers (might be fixed in retail version). A few seconds or so.

This seems like a fairly generic shooter (with a little wall running and Titans) with no real story.  Basically, all multiplayer modes for shooters ever.  For people who like multiplayer shooter modes (particularly stuff like Call of Duty) - you will probably feel at home in this game.

Fable Anniversary (360) is Kind of a Frustrating Mess

So I recently got Fable Anniversary (I know it was released on February 4th, but I started playing today).  I remember this game being interesting (though Molyneux did "promise" more than he could deliver).

In my memory, this was the weakest on the three Fable games (though many people say it was the best - and 3 is much maligned).  Yep, it looks like my memory was right again.

Ok so what is ok....
* It's the first Fable (though I don't remember it being as hard as it seems to me now)
* Their are achievements
* The graphics are ok (and it's widescreen I don't remember if it was before)
* Includes "Expansion": Fable the Lost Chapters
* SmartGlass: not sure this adds a lot, but it is something.

However this game has problems (and annoyances)
* Freezes: this game seems unstable.  I had it hard freeze at least three times in about 8 hours today (where I had to unplug it because the holding the power button wouldn't even shut it down).  That is even worse than Morrowind or Oblivion.
* Frequent load screens (could this have been improved if it would have released on the Xbox One instead?)
* They kept the stupid fishing mini-game (I really, really strongly dislike it)
* Sometimes for no reason the game seems to dim than re-illuminate then dim again (I don't think it was like that in the original)

* The enemies block way too much (don't remember if it was like that in the original)

- this game probably controlled better on "the Duke" than it does on the 360 controller (maybe i'll have to look at some of the settings)

GamerScore Video Game Resolution Complete

Well, I guess that was a little too easy.

I had a video game resolution to increase my GamerScore (GS) by 5,000 points in 2014 (from 62,683).  Well, here it is January 31, 2014 and my current GamerScore is 67,888.
So now, I guess I should try to reach...

* 5,000 cumulative GS on the Xbox One by the end of the year (though I don't currently have the budget for many games - come on Bing, give me some more 20 credit days).

* 66,666 cumulative GS for Xbox 360/Games for Windows/etc.  That seems do-able since I have two games pre-ordered (Fable Anniversary and South Park: The Stick of Truth) and I should have access to Games with Gold until at least September.  Ok, so that isn't a huge stretch since I am currently at 64,000 (or so for that grouping).

List of Games Beaten in 2014 (through September)

I've decided to have a running post throughout this year for the games I beat (I am assuming that there might be a next year).  To qualify, the story/career mode/etc. must be completed within the calendar year 2014.  I could have started any game since the beginning of time, I just have had to beat the game to put it on the list.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood Impressions (XB1)

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is a $15 (or whatever other currencies may be) downloadable title (platformer) available on the Xbox One (coming sometime soon-ish to the Xbox 360).

So what are my current opinions of this game (based off of the levels I have "beaten" so far (about halfway through, I think: level 4-1, edit: now stuck on 6-3 where I will probably be until the end of time)?

Updated: I finally beat the game (somehow), I hope I never see a vine again.
